The Writer’s Pon Farr

Spock, that sexy, green-blooded Vulcan, first introduced us Earthlings to Pon Farr in the episode Amok Time. The condition occurs every seven years as part of the Vulcan mating cycle and is a chemical imbalance which causes erratic, and sometimes violent, emotional behavior in Vulcans. They must mate or die.

November is National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo), the Writer’s Pon Farr. It’s like they must write or die. It’s a mad frenzy in an attempt to write a 50,000 word novel during the month of November.

If you’re saying to yourself, “That’s insane!” You’re not alone. It is insane. It is illogical. It is the writer’s Pon Farr.

Most writers who have completed NaNoWriMo agree that the secret lies in the preparation and pre-writing they perform in October.
