Yes, I’m a dinosaur. I use an alarm clock instead of my phone.
I’ve had it for about 10 years. It’s one of those that automatically sets the time (this is important later) when you plug it in, has duel alarms, and a crappy radio.
Even though it does automatically set the time, it can be changed, and because I hate being late for anything, I always set the time ahead by anywhere from 9 – 15 minutes. I don’t know exactly, because I close my eyes when I push the little button. After all, if I know how far ahead it is, it sort of defeats the purpose of setting it ahead.
If the power goes out, the battery backup will make sure it stays on the correct, set-ahead time.
So, there’s all the backstory to this little mystery.
Fast forward to this morning.
The alarm goes off.
I’m not having any of it, so I waved my hand in front of the infrared indicator to snooze. (Also important. My hand never gets anywhere close to the top of the clock.)
A little while later, the alarm goes off again.
Again, I wave off and have it snooze.
And, rinse & repeat.
Finally, when my alarm goes off a 4th time at 7:44, I get up, do my morning routine, wake up the dog, and head downstairs for coffee, resigned to the fact that I’m going to be late to the day job.
Coffee’s brewing, and I’m walking Brutus in the backyard, playing Pokemon Go, and I notice the time on my phone is 7:21.
Yes, a full 20 minutes before I woke up.
No coffee yet.
I immediately go back upstairs and check my alarm clock.
Sure enough, my alarm clock displays 8:31.
It was correct yesterday morning.
It was correct last night when I went to bed.
No one else in my house has access to this clock.
I never touch the top of the clock where the buttons to change the time are.
We’re not anywhere near the time for the switch from DST to regular time.
Give me your best theories.
